Introduction to Shaftist Art by Baron Barrymore Halpenny (Artist & Founder)
As I gazed into the night sky that had enveloped itself around the beautiful Mediterranean town that I was
staying in, I became entranced by the hypnotic effect of the shafts of light that played with the cloak of
darkness that was the night. Here in my minds eye, I saw wondrous works of art. A canvas of black with shafts of colour played
upon it. My mind and heart was filled with the emotion that grasped me as I became aware of the magical
beauty that was presenting itself, before me. This form of art I christened “Shaftism”.
Some people may say that “Shaftism” looks nothing like shafts of light. One could also argue that “Cubist”
artwork has little to do with cubes and, “Gothic” is totally unrelated to the Goths. In these two cases one
would be justified in saying a Shaftist artwork is more aptly titled than a Cubist or Gothic, but in any
case, these names merely serve as labels for the styles of different art.
NOTICE:
Shaftism is a totally NEW word label that I have created to describe this art form, as is also the
use of Shaftist to describe an artist adopting this art form.
